Summer has ended, and now, as fall starts to settle in, we find ourselves thinking about travel. We have dreamed of visiting, where we might be able to afford, but either way, thoughts of flying to a place we love or possibly had never visited dance in our heads.
So, this fall, I’m going to help out my fellow Torontonians and travellers alike and tell you about some of the best places to visit.
1. Portugal – Lisbon & Porto
Fall in Portugal is a fantastic time to visit, with warm weather lingering through October. Start in Lisbon, a vibrant city of steep hills, historic trams, and stunning vistas. Then head to Porto, where you can wander the cobbled streets, sample world-renowned port wine, and take in the unique architecture. Fall colours in nearby Douro Valley vineyards are particularly stunning during harvest time.
2. Iceland
Iceland’s dramatic landscapes are perfect for an autumn escape. Starting in September, the Northern Lights begin to illuminate the skies. Visit the Blue Lagoon for a hot soak, trek through volcanic landscapes, or explore waterfalls like Gullfoss and Seljalandsfoss as the crowds thin and the air turns crisp.
3. Morocco – Marrakech & Atlas Mountains
For a completely different fall experience, head to Morocco. Start in Marrakech, where you’ll be immersed in the energy of the souks and the vibrant colours of Jardin Majorelle. Then, venture into the Atlas Mountains, where the cooler temperatures make hiking more comfortable. Fall is the best time to visit Morocco before winter snow arrives in the mountains.
4. Italy – Amalfi Coast & Tuscany
Fall in Italy is magical. The Amalfi Coast’s coastal beauty is enhanced by quieter towns and cooler breezes, making it a perfect time to explore without the summer crowds. In Tuscany, the vineyards come alive with harvests, offering wine-tasting tours and food festivals that celebrate autumn’s bounty. The rolling hills of the countryside are bathed in golden hues, making it a photographer’s paradise.
5. Japan – Kyoto & Tokyo
Fall in Japan is synonymous with the stunning red and gold hues of maple trees. Kyoto’s ancient temples, shrines, and gardens are particularly beautiful in autumn. For a mix of nature and urban excitement, visit Tokyo, where the city’s parks transform with autumn colours. The weather is mild, making it a comfortable time to explore both the natural and cultural sides of Japan.
6. Ireland – Dublin & Cliffs of Moher
While Ireland might not immediately come to mind for a fall escape, its rugged coastline, rolling green hills, and cozy pub culture make it an ideal autumn destination. Dublin’s literary history and vibrant city life are perfect for urban travellers. For nature lovers, the Cliffs of Moher and scenic drives along the Wild Atlantic Way offer breathtaking views, often with fewer tourists in the fall.
7. Turkey – Istanbul & Cappadocia
Fall is one of the best times to explore Turkey, with cooler weather making sightseeing more pleasant. Start in Istanbul, where the city’s blend of history, culture, and stunning mosques is best enjoyed without the summer heat. Then, venture to Cappadocia, known for its fairy-tale landscape of rock formations and hot air balloon rides at sunrise. The fall colours add an extra layer of beauty to this already otherworldly region.
8. Croatia – Dubrovnik & Split
The Croatian coast in the fall offers a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere compared to the summer months. Dubrovnik’s historic Old Town is less crowded, and the Adriatic Sea remains warm enough for a swim well into October. Head to Split to explore its Roman ruins and vibrant markets. Inland, the national parks like Plitvice Lakes are stunning with autumnal foliage.
9.Slovenia – Ljubljana & Lake Bled
Slovenia’s charm is undeniable in the fall, with colourful forests surrounding its fairytale-like towns and lakes. Ljubljana, the capital, is a walkable city known for its green spaces and lively cultural scene. Just a short drive away, Lake Bled offers stunning views of its iconic island church set against the backdrop of the Julian Alps, all framed by the vivid colours of fall.
10. South Africa – Cape Town & Winelands
Although fall in the Northern Hemisphere means spring in South Africa, it’s still a fantastic time to visit. Cape Town’s blooming gardens and wineries in Stellenbosch come alive as the weather warms. Take in panoramic views from Table Mountain, go whale watching, or explore the nearby vineyards. The contrast of a Southern Hemisphere spring is a unique twist for an autumn trip.
Each destination offers unique experiences for fall travellers, with pleasant weather, stunning natural beauty, and cultural richness. So pack your bags, grab your passport, and embark on an unforgettable autumn adventure from Toronto.
