Canadian Independent Media Fund Launches Inaugural Fundraiser

In a time when access to facts and unbiased information is more critical than ever, the Canadian Independent Media Fund (CIMF) is stepping up to protect and amplify the voices that shape our democracy.  On November 24th this collective will be throwing its first annual fundraiser in support of independent Canadian media, and you’re invited.

The CIMF is a passionate collective of independent media creators, journalists, and its supporters are dedicated to building a sustainable future for grassroots media in Canada. This organization strives to amplify underrepresented perspectives, support impactful journalism, and ensure that independent voices remain strong and accessible across the country.

Why Independent Media Matters

Independent media is critical to a thriving democracy, offering stories and perspectives that mainstream outlets often overlook. It challenges the status quo, holds power accountable, and tells the stories that truly matter to communities. By supporting grassroots journalism, the CIMF seeks to create a media ecosystem that reflects the diversity of voices, experiences, and issues that shape Canada. The need for independent media is not just about amplifying local stories—it is also a critical tool for shedding light on global injustices.

How the Canadian Independent Media Fund is Working to Make a Difference

The CIMF recognizes the importance of these brave storytellers, both locally and globally. By providing financial support, networking opportunities, and advocacy, the Fund ensures that independent voices have the resources they need to thrive. This includes helping media outlets that focus on international human rights issues like Palestine, ensuring their stories reach a broader audience despite systemic barriers.

The CIMF doesn’t just strengthen Canadian media— Independent media can challenge entrenched power structures, empower marginalized voices, and spark the change our world so desperately needs.

Who the CIMF supports

The Canadian Independent Media Fund’s inaugural fundraiser brings together an inspiring lineup of media organizations committed to fearless, independent journalism. The Real News Network (TRNN) amplifies marginalized voices and challenges power through uncompromising coverage of current events. On The Line Media offers critical, contextual journalism paired with thoughtful conversations and informed commentary. Ricochet Media delivers award-winning coverage of local, national, and Indigenous issues, while The Maple dives deep into investigative journalism, exploring stories and ideas others overlook. Rounding out the group is The Grind, Toronto’s only free, city-wide print magazine focusing on local politics and culture. Together, these outlets embody the mission of independent media: to inform, challenge, and empower.

Why It Matters Now More Than Ever

The world cannot afford to look away, and neither can we. By empowering independent media, we are equipping communities with the tools to fight disinformation, amplify the voices of the oppressed, and drive meaningful change. Let’s ensure that the voices telling the stories that matter are heard—loud and clear.
