Those who call Toronto home know that the city is full of fun opportunities and adventures ranging from museums, art galleries, concerts, pop-up experiences and so much more. A unique experience I have had my eye on for years is lipstick making at Lip Lab!
Lip Lab was originally owned by BITE Beauty, and though ownership has changed the amazing formulas have stayed the same. Once arrived at the Lip Lab of your choice, a beautician who seems more like a scientist guides you through the process. First you learn of the various offerings including lipsticks, lip balms, lip glosses and liners. You can make items matte, satin or sheer, add flavouring, choose your own case colour and get engraving. You can also purchase scrubs, lip masks, lip primer, a makeup bag or lip brush to round out your kit. My goal when walking in was to leave with a lipstick unlike any shade I owned. After testing the various finishes and shimmers on my hand, I went with a traditional satin lipstick.
After looking at a rage of shade options, I chose a the pink-brown tones. The cosmetician spread base shades on a sheet that measured the quantities of each tone which I sampled first. We adjusted with a few more tweaks which I continued to try on my lips until I was satisfied with a chocolate-y mousse shade unlike anything I own. Afterwards I chose the flavour and a coffee-chocolate to match the shade, chose the case colour and watched as the staff engraved the case for me. The entire experience takes approximately a hour and your shade is saved for future experiences.
The team shared with me that purchases are made in trends. Often they will see people come ad purchase similar shades during specific times of the year, or as trends change in the fashion industry. They also do have repeat customers who love the experience of making new customizable items, but also some people come in and buy ready-made shades without the personalized experience.
