5 Simple Changes That Will Improve Your Work-Life Balance

A good work-life balance allows you to enjoy more freedom and flexibility in your life. Work should not make up your entire life—rest, socializing, and fun are just as important. A proper work-life balance makes you more productive, stress-free, and healthy. In demanding workplaces, finding an appropriate balance between work and personal time can be particularly challenging, but there are a few simple tweaks you can make to your life that can help you express yourself and set boundaries to benefit your well-being.

 

Set Clear Boundaries and Schedules

You’re more susceptible to extending your work day without a set schedule. You may also accept more workloads when your boundaries aren’t firm. It’s vital to set boundaries in the workplace to avoid biting off more than you can chew. It may seem like taking on excess work is better for your bosses, but it can come at the cost of your health and happiness. You’ll need to practice saying no to extra tasks or workloads, especially when your plate is full. Designate a specific start and end time to your work day to avoid working overtime or round the clock; this is very important if you’re working remotely. Once the work day is over, or if you have a day off, be sure to silence your work notifications, so you’re not tempted to check them or get additional work done. Answering “just one email” is still work, and it often turns into more than just one.

 

Make Time for Rest and Fun

You need to prioritize self-care and break time just as much as your work. When you put off relaxation, you won’t make it a priority. Break times, rest, and fun are much easier to achieve when you schedule and prioritize them similarly to your work schedule. Dedicate regular blocks of your work day to your allotted breaks, and see them through. Rest your mind and body during this break time—stretch, take deep breaths, and shut off your mind for a moment. When you aren’t working, schedule at least one fun thing to do per week to help you balance things better.

 

Express Yourself at Work

You don’t want to bring work home with you, but it may be beneficial to bring the comforts of home to work. When you feel more at ease and yourself in the workplace, you can reduce related stress and feel more comfortable getting the job done. Being able to express yourself also makes setting boundaries and saying no when necessary much easier. To express yourself at work, decorate your workspace to maximize productivity and convenience. Tailor your wardrobe to showcase your personality while staying professional and comfortable. If you wear business casual attire, choose garments, colours, patterns, and fabrics that make you feel stylish and represented. Know When to Move On

Not all workplaces will prioritize your well-being. Some will take advantage of your work ethic to overwork you without options. If your firm boundaries aren’t being respected, or your workload seems never to end, you may want to consider finding a different job. No respectable employer will want you to see endless stress and burnout. Some industries and roles do come with stress, but there will be plenty of opportunities and benefits to relieve that stress. You should feel respected, represented, and cared for within reason at a job. If colleagues or managers do not respect your ‘no’ or expect you to sacrifice your breaks or days off for work, you may not be the best fit for the role. It doesn’t hurt to search for other opportunities before the stress becomes too much to handle.

 

When it comes to finding a proper work-life balance, you may need to take practice steps initially. Setting boundaries may feel intimidating at first, especially when you haven’t set any before. Maintain your ground. Start with saying no to smaller tasks before jumping to larger ones. Use a support system like friends, family, and positive coworkers to help listen to you when you feel silenced. With practice and dedication, you can find a much happier balance between work and freedom.
