African Fashion Week Toronto: A Celebration of Culture and Fashion

African Fashion Week Toronto (AFWT) 2024, held from August 22 to 25, was a resounding success, celebrating the richness and diversity of African fashion and culture. As the premier event for African fashion creatives in Canada, AFWT continues to grow, showcasing not only the work of established designers but also providing a platform for emerging talents.

The event kicked off with the **Student Design & Creative Festival** on August 22, highlighting the next generation of designers. This year, Shark Beauty™ sponsored the festival as part of their mission to democratize premium hair tools while celebrating and catering to every hair type and texture. They awarded a tuition honorarium to a promising student, underscoring Shark Beauty’s commitment to supporting future talent in the fashion industry.  They also highlighted their flagship beauty tool The Shark FlexStyle®, which stood out as a versatile tool that easily transforms from a powerful, fast, no-heat-damage hair dryer to an ultra-versatile multi-styler.

Yonge-Dundas Square, temporarily renamed **Sankofa Square** for the occasion, was the focal point on August 23. The square was transformed into a vibrant marketplace during the day, featuring designers from across the globe, and hosted a high-energy runway show in the evening. This event was open to the public, allowing a broad audience to experience the creativity and cultural significance of African fashion.

The highlight of the week was undoubtedly the **Luxury Couture Experience** on August 24 at Wychwood Barns, featuring high-end collections that blended African traditions with modern luxury. The event attracted fashion connoisseurs and industry leaders, further solidifying AFWT’s reputation as a key player on the global fashion stage.

AFWT 2024 wrapped up on August 25 with the **Lookbook Day Party** at Spaces Toronto, a festive conclusion that brought together designers, models, and fashion enthusiasts for a final celebration of African fashion’s impact and influence.

This year’s AFWT not only showcased stunning fashion but also emphasized the importance of community, culture, and creativity, making it a standout event in Toronto’s cultural calendar.
