The Mississauga Food Bank Launches Annual Spring Campaign to Keep Up With Increased Demand

This past year has been challenging on many, but for others, it’s been truly devastating. While some of us have been having a lousy year, others have found themselves unable to feed themselves and their families.

The need for help seems higher now than at any point in my lifetime. This need requires initiatives to assist and provide, but they also rely on the community’s support and the communities around them, sometimes even to survive.

Having made Toronto our home personally for over 15 years and professionally for over 8, we’ve seen the need here in the city. We also know that our neighbours to the west in Mississauga need some help too. That’s where The Mississauga Food Bank comes in.

TheMississauga Food Bank hosts its annual Spring Food Drive sponsored by Scotts Canada to raise $200,000 and 150,000 pounds of food to feed hungry neighbours across Mississauga. As a fellow Ontarian and city neighbour, I just had to help spread the word.

Since the onset of the pandemic, The Mississauga Food Bank has seen a surge in demand to feed over 30,000 people across their network of over 50 agencies. Thanks to the community’s support and generosity, food for almost 4,000,000 meals have already been distributed – but they won’t stop there.

“This year, more than any other year, The Mississauga Food Bank needs your help to continue to feed hungry children, seniors, families, and neighbours and make for a brighter tomorrow. During the pandemic, we’ve already seen over 7,500 first-time food bank users, and this number continues to grow. Will you give hungry neighbours that renewed sense of hope this spring?” says Meghan Nicholls, CEO at The Mississauga Food Bank.

“For years we have been proud supporters of The Mississauga Food Bank and are thrilled to partner with them again this year for their annual Spring Food Drive. We see the importance of providing fresh and nutritious food to everyone across our city, especially during this critical time,” says Nick DiIorio, VP and General Manager at Scotts Canada.

The funds and food raised this spring will continue to feed hungry neighbours across the city and ensure children, seniors, families, and others in need have enough healthy and nutritious food. Community members can get involved by hosting a fundraiser or contactless food drive or making a financial donation to allow the Mississauga Food Bank to purchase fresh and frozen food at a quarter of the cost.

For even more fun, The Mississauga Food Bank invites the community to participate in their brand new initiative; the CanYou Find It? Scavenger Hunt.To participate, download and print the activity sheets found on their website, hide their most needed items around your house, and send your family on a hunt. Decorate a box in spring decor, and deliver it to The Mississauga Food Bank on Saturday, April 3, 2021, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at our Spring Contactless Drive-Thru Food Drive.
