Go Local: The Six Farms

In a continued effort to be healthier, eat better and go local, our latest search led us to The Six Farms, growers of sustainable indoor microgreens.

Now, for those of you who don’t know, the easiest way to explain is that microgreens are essentially baby vegetables and probably fall somewhere between a sprout and a baby green. They are packed with not only flavour but can be very high in nutritional value.

I was lucky enough to be introduced to microgreens years ago, thanks to ADDICTED, but I have learned when buying them, like most things, it’s best to source it locally if possible. So, when I came across The Six Farms and found out there were growing microgreens just a short car ride away, I had to learn more and get my hands on some Ontario microgreens.

When The Six Farms microgreens arrived at our headquarters, I quickly shot, unpacked them and had some samples, which were all crisp and delicious, but what caught my eye was the Popcorn Microgreens. What were they, how did they taste? I had so many questions for The Six Farms, but first. The Six is a collective of urban farmers and bioengineers who believe in growing the best quality microgreens and herbs using organic seeds and the latest urban farming techniques without pesticides, herbicides and fungicides.

Microgreens are arguably the most nutrient-dense vegetables available. According to researchers, microgreens are packed with nutrient levels 4 – 40 times that of their full-grown counterparts. Kind of a big deal in a tiny package. Microgreens have anticancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing, neuroprotective, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial benefits!

At The Six Farms, they have a dream and a mission to establish indoor vertical farms throughout Canada to grow not only microgreens but over 100 different varieties of baby stage leafy greens. That includes not only some tasty, crisp and genuinely yummy green microgreens. It also includes this fantastic popcorn microgreen.

Now, was it buttery, kind of, was it oddly sweet in a good way. Yes, either way, it was an experience we would try again, which goes for all the microgreens in the line-up. We were impressed by not only the quilty, the favours and the freshness of the offering from The Six Farms. Beyond that, knowing that they are grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides can leave you secure in the fact these greens are responsibly grown and thus healthy for you and your family.

It’s pretty easy to see why we are fans of The Six Farms. They make some seriously addictive microgreens; they are Canadian and find innovative ways to grow sustainably, which helps us get that much closer to a healthy life and hopefully a brighter future.
