Travel Smarter with a Handy Waist Pack

A waist bag, or a fanny pack as they are more commonly known, is easily one of the best and most underrated bags you can get for travelling. Here are a few reasons why, as well as a few things to remember when choosing one.

Convenience

Firstly, and one of the most obvious benefits of a waist bag is the convenience of it. Whether you are storing your vape starter kit, wallet, keys, or anything in between, storing it all on your waist or across your body is simply more convenient.

Additionally, the convenience of not needing to remember it is a big plus. Considering it is attached to you in some way at all times, you don’t need to remember it the same way you would a backpack or handbag.

Security

Building on the last point, the fact that a waist bag is always around your waist or across your chest means you can always see i,t and you are always aware of it, and therefore, it is a very safe place to store your valuables.

This may seem like a small thing, but once again, simply having the bag constantly on your person and in your sight adds a layer of security that is almost unmatched.

Versatile Styling

Nowadays, waist bags come in all shapes, sizes, and styles, and they are exceptionally easy to style and add to your wardrobe. Whether you want a sophisticated look akin to a designer bag, or a utility-style waist bag that is ideal for the outdoors, there is something for everyone.

Hands-Free

While tied to convenience, you shouldn’t underestimate how useful it is to not need to use your arms and hands. It makes everything from holding drinks to protecting yourself if you trip substantially easier.

This will only be something you appreciate once you have used the bag for a while, but it is a great bonus and one that should be considered.

Space-Saving

Unlike a handbag or a backpack, a waist bag is small and compact, and can be placed in a bag and removed quite easily, and is simply better at storing a lot of things in a small form factor.

Perfect for Flying

When it comes to flying, a waist bag can and will be your new best friend. Firstly, they can store the essentials you need for a flight, including your paperwork, passport, phone, medication, a few snacks, and everything in between.

Secondly, most airlines don’t count a waist bag as a carry-on or additional bag, like they do with handbags or backpacks. While they don’t have the same amount of storage, being able to take on an additional bag with, typically, no problem, is a huge plus.

What to Remember

Now that you know why you need a waist bag for travelling, here are a few things to remember when choosing one.

Size

The first thing you need to consider is the size of the bag. This can be tricky, as you want one that is big enough to store your essentials, but also one that isn’t so big that it feels more like a backpack.

Therefore, first, consider what you will store, or at least want to store in it, and then find a bag that is the suitable size for this.

Material

While travelling, your waist bag will take a beating, and because of this, it should be made from a durable material. Canvas, reinforced polyester, etc, are all great options to choose from, and will stand the test of time.

Secondly, choose a material that is easy to clean as well, as dirt will be a common occurrence and a common problem that you will face.

Security Features

For security, one small detail that can make a big difference is the type of zipper tab the bag has. Tabs that have loops can be locked, and while this won’t prevent someone from snatching the entire bag, it will stop anyone from sneakily opening it.

Weight Distribution

A small factor to consider that can make a big difference regarding comfort, is how the waist bag distributes weight. The way the bag is structured can often give you a clue as to how the weight will be distributed.

The first thing to look at is the bag itself. If it is narrow and deep, you will find that the bag is going to hang a lot more once you start filling it. However, if it is a bit more shallow and wider, then the weight is spread more across the main strap, and therefore has better distribution.

Secondly, look at where the strap runs in relation to the bag. If it attaches to the top of the bag, once again, the bag will hang more when it is filled. On the other hand, if the strap runs through the middle of the bag, then the weight spreads out a bit more evenly.
